The cooling
time of a piece
How essential is proper cooling time?
It is imperative that the wares within
the kiln cool down properly, at a slow pace, to avoid cracking
or damage. A fan may be used with extreme caution to aid
the process. This is called "pushing " the wares.
If the kin has not been allowed to cool properly, and is
opened too soon, there is serious risk of thermal shock.
This means the wares may crack and even explode.
To fully understand this principle, think
of taking an ice cube and immersing it in hot water. It
will crack. A similar thing happens to the wares if they
cool to rapidly. Thermal shock can destroy a costly piece.
There is no way to rectify this problem when it occurs,
therefore, proper cooling is an essential part of the creation
process.
