The
third firing and over glazing of a Ceramic piece
This is the phase to which "china" is decorated.
Again there are many different techniques used to decorate
pieces. The third firing also follows a different kiln schedule.
This requires a much shorter firing time, at a much cooler
temperature.
The term "over glaze" describes
materials used to decorate a fired, glazed surface. There
are three categories for over glaze decoration:
1. China paints : Are similar to one strokes
in color and semi - transparent paints.
2. Metallic's : Minerals such as gold, white gold, platinum
and lusters that are metal based.
3. Decals : Can either be comprised of china paint or metallics.
With proper firing, over glaze decorations
become a permanent part of the piece and provide a durable
finish. The glaze softens just enough to take in the colors
over it. Over glaze firing is the trickiest firing a ceramist
does.
Lusters, such as Mother of pearl, Halo
pearls, Opals, Platinum, Halo Platinum, and Bright Golds
are highly reflective and mirror like. During the 4th and
5th firing , again the over glazed piece releases a gas.
Proper ventilation is imperative. Firing time for over glazes
ranges from 4 - 6 hours , and cooling time an range from
12 - 24 hours.
